Last year I visited Amsterdam for the first time and I absolutely fell in love with the area. Here are some things touristy things to not miss out on! I also loved just wondering around the small streets and canals and admiring the beautiful houses.
First tip: Stay in a hotel that is close to everything! We stayed in the Mecure Amsterdam centre canal district. This hotel was basic but suited all our needs.
Visit the Sex Museum – It’s just a bit of a laugh really and a must when in Dam. You need a photo next to the huge plastic penis, of course!
Stop for Lunch at Cafe Proust – This was a small local cafe which we found and had some delicious toasted sandwiches. We sat outside even though it was raining as it had a shelter.
Visit a plant shop! – This one was called Wildernes and was absolutely adorable!
Have dinner at Thrill Grill – The interior of this place was very cool and was very quiet and not touristy at all. They had some great burgers though.
Go to Kanarie Club – This place is amazing! It’s tucked away looking like an old warehouse but in actual fact it’s a huge quirky bar and restaurant. The cocktails were also amazing!
Go to Corner Bakery for Breakfast/Brunch – This place is a big hit with the locals and was very busy. I had scrambled eggs and it was delicious. My friend has pancakes which also looked great.
Visit Anne Frank’s House museum – This was one of my favourite things from the Amsterdam trip as it was so emotional and heart- warming learning all about Anne Frank and her life. The audio guide was really good and I would honestly urge everyone to visit this place. Just a heads up, pre book tickets or wait in the queue for hours.
Hire a bike and ride it around Vondelpark – This was soooo much fun! We hired our bikes from Mac Bikes and they were cheap and easy and no hassle. This was another favourite part of the trip for me.
Take a photo with the IAmsterdam Sign! – You just have too really. Everyone does.
Have a pancake from the Happy Pig – I got a little bit peckish so I stopped to try a pancake which was very good!
Go for a canal ride – This was very fun and we learnt more about Amsterdam. It was lovely to just see all the pretty houses.
Go to Pluk for breakfast – Oh my these pancakes were so dreamy! Pluk sell delicious food and the interior is also gorgeous.
Grab a cocktail from Lion Noir – My cocktail was called Alice in Wonderland it would be rude of me not to have that one! It was a divine cocktail and it was lovely drinking it outside. We even got chatting to some locals.
Visit the Banksy Exhibition – This was a fun thing to do and was the last thing we did before we headed home. I would recommend going here.
That’s all for my travel guide, I hope you love Amsterdam as much as me!
